Valerie Browning is known as “Maalika” or “Queen” to the nomadic Afar tribe of Ethiopia. Together with her Islamic husband Ismael, an Afar clan leader, she has dedicated her life to bringing education and medical aid to the people of this harsh land.
This true account of Maalika’s life makes a compelling read, both uplifting and at times disturbing. It is an honestly brutal and opinionated account of a strong willed woman who has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the Afar people despite many obstacles throughout her journey.
Her story delves deeply into the politics, and the ins and outs of the volunteer organisations working tirelessly in this big land.
It makes for an interesting and thought provoking read.
